Heaten AS and AVL Schrick sign Letter of Intent for Scaled Design of 1 MW Industrial Very High-Temperature Heat Pump and Promoting Increased Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development in Many Industries.
Letter of Intent
Heaten AS and AVL Schrick have signed a letter of intent to continue the longstanding and trusted relationship for joint technology development and knowledge exchange. The letter of intent sets the basis for the continued cooperation to successfully scale up, engineer and manufacture (small series) Heaten’s 1MW (heat output) very-high-temperature heat pump (“VHTHP”) and existing organic Rankine cycle (“ORC”) technologies and to jointly develop commercial applications by promoting increased energy efficiency and sustainable development in key industrial markets.
Subject to future customer requests and investment decisions the partners will also explore opportunities to license Heaten’s ORC technology to AVL customers.
Ken Roger Lisø, Executive Chairman of Heaten AS explains that “the electrification of heating processes is key to the decarbonization of about one-third of greenhouse gas emissions from a large variety of industries, including among other, pulp & paper, food & beverages, chemical, automotive, metal, plastic, textiles and many more. Heaten’s VHTHP technology platform is ready for scaling and market introduction. We are excited to continue this journey together with AVL Schrick.”
Roger Wildemann, Managing Director of AVL Schrick GmbH comments that “AVL Schrick’s cooperation with Heaten AS is an example of our commitment to our customers. We are proud to jointly create a crucial sustainable energy product for industry processes. Combining Heaten’s advanced high-temperature heat pump technology with AVL Schrick’s long-standing tradition of quality engineering & design services, including our global commercial reach, we are perfectly rigged to become a major contributor to making industries more sustainable in the years to come.”
About Heaten: Heaten owns the leading industrial very-high-temperature heat pump (VHTHP) technology (the “HeatBooster”) and has an 8-year R&D history covering heat-to-power (organic Ranking cycles, ORCs) and power-to-heat machines, VHTHPs. Heaten has successfully delivered process temperatures up to 165 °C with its current technology and is also preparing to take this even further up to some 300 – 400 ˚C over the next years. However, for the initial period, Heaten will together with AVL Schrick prioritize megawatt-sized heat pumps using the current, proven technology platform, by scaling up the products’ output heat capacity.
About AVL Schrick: AVL Schrick GmbH is part of AVL List GmbH. With more than 11,500 employees, AVL List GmbH is the world’s largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing of all types of powertrain systems (hybrid, combustion engine, transmission, electric drive, batteries, fuel cell and control technology), their integration into the vehicle and is increasingly taking on new tasks in the field of assisted and autonomous driving as well as data intelligence. It provides industry-leading technologies and services based on the highest quality and innovation standards to help customers reduce complexity and add value.
AVL Schrick has been actively developing new, alternative powertrain technologies since the early 2000s and began integrating hybrid technologies in vehicles as early as 2003. Owing to its strong growth, the company expanded in 2007, opening a new site. In 2010 AVL Schrick began series production of CHP engines. The year 2012 saw the expansion of its small-series production of APUs, as well as research and development work in Waste Heat Recovery systems.
